Aqaba Container Terminal Expansion

LocationAqaba, Jordan
ClientsAqaba Container Terminal
MissionTo provide repairs, cathodic protection and inspection activities for the main container terminal in the Gulf of Aqaba.

The Location

Aqaba, Jordan

The Challenge

This 18-month contract of providing repairs and corrosion prevention to Aqaba’s Container Terminal was set to be a logistically challenging project, with the addition of 40°C+ working conditions.

The Result

Ocean Kinetics quickly mobilised to the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea, to carry out underwater visual and thickness readings of the main tubular piles and the sheet pile bulkhead wall.

Prior to the inspection, all steel bearing piles and bulkhead wall pilers were cleaned from the underside of the deck to seabed. This allowed a close visual inspection and thickness readings to be taken of all steelwork. Several areas were identified as structurally unsound then a repair and preparation system was designed and manufactured.

Steel jackets were manufactured using Ocean Kinetics extensive fabrication facilities in Scotland and shipped to site, the steel jackets were fitted to several piles and grouted. The remaining piles were protected using Denso Tape, protected by HDPE jackets. The design life was over 20 years.
