Ocean Kinetics is at the forefront of engineering, with an extensive track record in fabrication, oil and gas, renewables, fishing and aquaculture, marine works and marine salvage.

We are ideally placed with offices, workshops and stores in Lerwick and Aberdeen. These assets allow Ocean Kinetics to provide innovative, cost-effective, solutions to the challenges faced by our clients. Ocean Kinetics highly skilled teams of technicians and engineers can work from either base or rapidly mobilise to your site.

To help meet growing demand from the oil and gas industry, we have recently invested in:

  • A £3M custom-built 3,600m² facility in Lerwick
  • Hi-tech CNC machinery, including high definition plasma cutting, metal forming, milling, rolling and shearing
  • Additional highly-skilled staff, from ASME IX qualified welders through to CSWIP inspectors and professional engineers
  • Quality Management Systems, fully accredited to ISO 9001, ISO 3834-2 and EN 1090

About

History

Ocean Kinetics was established in 1992 by John Henderson to specialise in marine engineering solutions.

We have expanded to become the local engineering experts in fabrication, oil and gas, renewables and fishing and aquaculture.

Ocean Kinetics’ first purpose built buildings were opened in 1998. As the company grew, an extension was added in 2000 and additional stores built in 2002.

To meet the demand from the oil and gas industry, Ocean Kinetics moved into a brand new custom-built building in 2012. The new building gave Ocean Kinetics the opportunity to invest in cutting edge technology for the workshops, as well as a comprehensive stores open to trades and the public.

Ocean Kinetics are now able to provide complete turnkey engineering services, with a dedicated team of project managers, designers, trades and support staff.

The company is now based in three locations:

  • Lerwick Harbour: Main design offices, machine Stores and specialised workstores
  • Dales Voe, Lerwick Docks: Heavy lift quay, heavy engineering and fabrication workstores
  • Aberdeen Docks: Workstores for engineering and marine work

Health and Safety:

Ocean Kinetics are committed to the provision of a safe and healthy workplace. Health and safety has an equal status to all other business values within the organisation.

To maintain our excellent health and safety record, Ocean Kinetics developed a safety management system that is accredited to BS EN OHSAS 18001 and our core HSE policies and procedures are externally audited by the FPAL ‘Verify’ process.

Ocean Kinetics conducts business in a way which reduces risk, both for our staff and in the services that we provide to our Clients. We invest heavily in training and maintain modern facilities and equipment. All our employees fully participate in achieving our health and safety objectives and our QHSE policies are displayed throughout our offices, workshops and rest areas.

It’s vital to us that our workshops are safe, our machines are in tip-top condition, our staff are comfortable and that they have the best tools they need to complete a job.

Environmental:

Ocean Kinetics was founded in the oil rich Shetland Islands; we understand more than most the need to manage the environmental impact of our actions. We identify the environmental aspects of all activities directly and indirectly associated with our work, then set and monitor objectives and targets for continual improvement.

Ocean Kinetics is committed to the ongoing improvement of our Environmental Management System and regularly hold management reviews to identify areas for the improvement of our excellent environmental performance.

Quality:

At Ocean Kinetics, we continually strive for the highest standard in everything we do. This is evident in not only our ISO9001, ISO 3834- 2 and EN1090-1 accreditations, but in the way we conduct our everyday business.

We invested heavily to achieve our ISO/EN standards and this raised both our level of service and quality of workmanship. In order to provide reassurance to our clients & maintain our accreditations, our management systems are regularly audited by SGS and TWI. We are also externally audited by the FPAL ‘Verify’ process and maintain industry leading scores.

Through our Quality Management System we continually seek opportunities to identify and implement improvement.

Company Policies:

Ocean Kinetics is committed to meeting or exceeding all the laws and regulations wherever we conduct business; and set our own standards or expectations much higher. These commitments are defined in our Company Policies which form part of our Company Manual.

Certified Materials

Ocean Kinetics maintains high levels of traceability within its workshops, through our quality management system. Materials are purchased from certified suppliers and are clearly tagged/labelled/identified. All incoming materials are marked with the purchase order & heat number. Copies of material certificates are kept on file.

Ocean Kinetics Quality Management System has been certified to ISO 9001:2008 since November 2005 ensuring high levels of quality assurance are maintained throughout the company.

John, the Managing Director, is the founder and majority shareholder of Ocean Kinetics. Prior to starting the company he worked in engineering in oil and gas and aquaculture, mainly in the subsea sectors. He has lead Ocean Kinetics through 18 years of sustained growth and development and is still very much focused on continued expansion. John recently completed the MIT - Entrepreneurship Development Programme in Boston.

She began her professional career in the audit department of Baker Tilly where she qualified as a Chartered Accountant and spent nine years gaining an invaluable insight into business operations. She joined Ocean Kinetics in 2008 and has been instrumental in the financial management of the company's development.

Mike qualified from the University of Hull with a First Class Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career working with MG Bennett & Associates in Rotherham, where he developed engineering solutions for specialist mechanical handling systems and the nuclear industry. He moved to Shetland in 2006 and then spent some years working at Sullom Voe Oil Terminal as a Project Engineer for Wood Group.

Michael joined the company in 1999 as Diving Supervisor and is now the Marine Projects Director. He qualified as a commercial diver in 1987 after serving a four year apprenticeship as a Shipwright working on vessels in dry dock. Over his career, Michael has worked on all types of diving projects and has overseen major projects throughout the UK and the Middle East.

Graeme has been a fully coded welder for over thirty years with extensive experience of working in the petrochemical industry. He is also a qualified welding inspector to CSWIP 3:1. Graeme has been managing all Ocean Kinetics' projects on Sullom Voe Oil terminal for several years now. His encyclopaedic knowledge of the different sectors on site at Sullom Voe is second to none. This makes it much easier for operators to explain their requirements to the company and allows us to react and find solutions quickly and efficiently.

Paul is one of Ocean Kinetics' most experienced managers with over 20 years’ service as a senior coded welder in the oil and gas industry. He has been with the company for sixteen years and was promoted from Workshop Supervisor to Production Manager some years ago. Paul has extensive on site experience at Sullom Voe Oil Terminal but is also a specialist in fish processing engineering having designed and delivered numerous successful projects throughout his career.

David is qualified to Level 3 in NEBOSH Occupational Health and Safety. He is also an IEMA associate member and holds an IOSH Management Certificate. David looks after Health and Safety in the organisation and also prepares and manages third party audits and certification. He has successfully helped the company increase its FPAL scores year on year and has also been instrumental in Ocean Kinetics attaining the highest ever UVDB rating in its recent annual audit.

Gwen has been with the company for 15 years and is the Manager of the Human Resources department. She is particularly focused on training needs and ensures all 70 employees are provided with appropriate ongoing training. This allows the company to maintain high standards of service to the clients. Gwen commenced employment at BP in Sullom Voe before having family and working in the social care sector. She has now taken her career full circle and ensures our staff are fully skilled and supported to work in oil and gas.

Clifford Hunter (or Cliffy as he is known), joined Ocean Kinetics in July 2001 after previously working for builders merchants Hay and Company. Cliffy helped set up Ocean Kinetics' stores and retail division. With an extensive knowledge of metal and steel, Cliffy is also on first name terms with just about every supplier in the country and now manages procurement for the company.

Tara graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with an BA Honours Degree (2:1) in Business Studies. She joined the company in 2010 and with her knowledge of business operations was promoted to Payroll Manager. Her work includes ensuring that all employees and subcontractors are paid, checking all timesheets and invoices. Tara also administers the Ocean Kinetics Pension Scheme and all PAYE/CIS responsibilities.

Liza joined Ocean Kinetics in 2013 and through her in-depth knowledge of our accounts and sales processes was promoted to Purchase Ledger Manager in 2016. Liza completed an HNC in accounting, completing a two year course in one year, winning the A9 Partnership Prize for an outstanding student in the process. She is continuing her professional development by pursuing a degree in Accountancy.
