APPRENTICES – INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE

March 3, 2026
AS SCOTTISH APPRENTICESHIP WEEK IS MARKED ACROSS THE COUNTRY, OCEAN KINETICS IS CELEBRATING THE VITAL ROLE APPRENTICES PLAY IN STRENGTHENING ITS WORKFORCE AND SECURING THE LONG-TERM FUTURE OF THE BUSINESS.

Apprentices have long been at the heart of the company’s success. Today, Ocean Kinetics is proud to be supporting two apprentices in Orkney, alongside eight apprentices and a graduate apprentice based in Shetland, reflecting a continued commitment to develop local talent.

Apprentices are not just learning a trade – they are the future of the business. By investing in apprenticeships, Ocean Kinetics is ensuring it has the skilled, motivated individuals needed to drive the company forward in an increasingly competitive and technical industry.

“The company has a strong track record of supporting apprentices throughout their journey, from those joining straight from school to those progressing through graduate-level programmes” said managing director, John Henderson. “Many long-serving and highly skilled individuals began their careers as apprentices, a testament to the lasting impact of investing in our people”.

This commitment is particularly significant at a time when Scotland is experiencing a well-documented shortage of skilled fabricators. While many businesses struggle to recruit, Ocean Kinetics is bucking the trend by developing its own talent pipeline, equipping apprentices with the specialist skills, experience and confidence required to succeed.

John continued: “By combining hands-on learning, mentoring from experienced colleagues and recognised qualifications, our apprentices gain real on-the-job experience while contributing directly to the business. In return, we benefit from fresh perspectives and a workforce built for the future.”

Ocean Kinetics apprentice Alec Sinclair said, “I was encouraged to apply after being advised that the company offered some of the most up-to-date workshop machinery and a highly regarded apprenticeship programme.”

When asked what he enjoyed most, Alec said: “The positive working environment and the opportunity to learn from experienced tradesmen.”

Fellow apprentice Hayden Michie also praised the supportive team atmosphere: “Working alongside a good group of tradesmen and apprentices allows us all to learn. The work is both challenging and varied.”

Apprentice Ryan Jamieson said, “It is a fast-paced working environment and you are always learning. Future apprentices should make the most of every opportunity available, engage with colleagues in the workshop and on site, be eager to learn, and they will be rewarded with plenty of opportunity.”

As Scottish Apprenticeship Week shines a spotlight on the value of apprenticeships, Ocean Kinetics remains committed to creating opportunities and nurturing talent.
