Ocean Kinetics opens applications for 2025 ‘Futures’ scholarship programme

OCEAN KINETICS OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR 2025 ‘FUTURES’ SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
Ocean Kinetics is now inviting applications for its 2025 scholarship programme, aimed at supporting students pursuing degrees in STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. The successful applicant will receive a £3,000 annual bursary, along with one-on-one mentoring and paid work placements with Ocean Kinetics during university breaks.
John Henderson, Ocean Kinetics Managing Director, “We are delighted to be running the Futures Scholarship for the fourth consecutive year. This programme has proven to be highly successful for both Ocean Kinetics and the scholars involved.
“Over the years, we’ve supported a number of students including Elsie Msalila, who is currently studying Mechatronics at the University of Glasgow; James Rendall, studying Mechanical Engineering at Edinburgh Napier University; Daniel Henry, who recently graduated from Heriot-Watt University with a first-class honours degree in Chemical Engineering; and most recently, Jos Hatrick, who began studying Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in 2024. We’re delighted to welcome Elsie, James, and Jos to Ocean Kinetics Ltd for their summer 2025 placements.”
The Ocean Kinetics Futures scholarship programme is awarded to Shetland students who plan to study a STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) at either HND or degree level. The scholarship is part of a series of initiatives, entitled ‘Futures’, a campaign designed to create opportunities for young people through employment and sponsorship.
Jos Hatrick, Ocean Kinetics 2024 ‘Futures’ Scholar, said, “My time with Ocean Kinetics has already been incredibly valuable. I’m gaining hands-on experience that links directly to what I’m studying, and it’s given me a much clearer idea of how engineering theory is applied in live projects.
“It’s also been great to work alongside such a knowledgeable and supportive team. The annual bursary has allowed me to fully concentrate on my studies and make the most of the opportunities available at university.”
Ocean Kinetics employs a range of skilled, fully qualified, technical and trades people, so career opportunities exist for coded welders, fabricators, turners, mechanical fitters, divers, project engineers, site managers, CSWIP/PCN qualified inspectors and 3D CAD design engineers. The company works to ISO 9001 & ISO 3834-2 certified quality management systems.
Applications in writing are open to Shetland students who plan to study a STEM subject at either HND or degree level this year.
Letters should include the applicant’s skills and qualifications, the chosen course and college/university, and the reason they are drawn to this particular course/establishment. They should also explain why they believe they are the ideal candidate, if there are any barriers that might prevent them undertaking study without scholarship support, and anything that is interesting or unique about their choice of career and/or ambitions, and how that ambition might benefit Shetland in the future.
Email to info@oceankinetics.co.uk by 5 September 2025. After the closing date, the applications will be reviewed and a shortlist of candidates will be invited for interview, based on the requirements of the scholarship.
