SHETLAND-BASED ENGINEERING PIONEERS TO SHOWCASE INNOVATION AND EXPERTISE AT AQUA NOR

August 15, 2025

A specialist marine engineering company which is pioneering fish-handling challenges in the aquaculture and fishing industry is to showcase its latest expertise at Aqua Nor, the world’s largest aquaculture technology exhibition, in Trondheim, Norway, from 19-21 August.

Shetland-based Ocean Kinetics, which was founded in 1992, has emerged as a leader in mastering engineering and fabricating challenges in the fish catching and aquaculture industries. From the design, manufacture and installation of mechanical and biological waste-water treatment systems for fish farming hatcheries and factories to providing commercial diving and a full ROV service for heavy lifting and salvage, the company has evolved to meet industry needs.

Among the company’s recent innovations has been a collaboration with Scottish Sea Farms to create and manufacture a process to minimise fish handling during health checks. The piping system devised by Ocean Kinetics efficiently channels fish back to the cages in water, thus eliminating escapes and reducing stress for the fish.

The invention is about to be rolled out company wide – an excellent example of innovation in action and a demonstration of how expert engineering can deliver productivity without compromise.

Managing director of Ocean Kinetics, John Henderson, said: “At Aqua Nor, Ocean Kinetics will be exhibiting not just what we do, but how we think. Aquaculture is a demanding sector where performance really matters, and through our innovations, we are shaping the future of the industry. Engineering for this sector isn’t just about specifications and strength – it’s about creativity, collaboration, and care.”

The Ocean Kinetics team works closely with its aquaculture clients to understand their challenges and complexities. The team then develops tailored solutions that improve efficiency, enhance safety, and support the sustainable evolution of the industry.

“Ocean Kinetics’ first home and main base is in Shetland, so we don’t just build, we live and work in an environment where equipment is tested to its limits,” said John Henderson. “Our experience in real-world, high-pressure conditions gives us a unique understanding of what works, what lasts, and what makes a difference.

“The Scottish Sea Farms project and many other successful developments have demonstrated our expertise and our innovation, and we are now looking forward to showcasing this at Aqua Nor.”

Meet the team at D-337 and D-343 to see how Ocean Kinetics is bringing innovation to life – from concept to completion – with engineering that is both smart and strong. They will be exhibiting alongside partners, MMG Ocean at D-343. Together, the two companies offer a full-service support for the marine sector, which includes MMG Ocean’s patented gangway systems for safe compliant crew transfer. MMG Gangways facilitate compliant crew and passenger transfer at all stages of tide staying within +/-55° (30° for passenger craft) achieved through a combination of hinge system and proprietary step profile.
