Each year we run a range of initiatives, entitled ‘Futures’, which are designed to create opportunities for young people through employment, apprenticeship, and sponsorship.
APPRENTICES
We always value our apprentices for their energy and enthusiasm to learn, generate new ideas, and bring fresh perspective to the business. Many of Ocean Kinetics’ people started their journeys as apprentices, remaining with us for their entire career.
Training is undertaken in our workshop in Lerwick and at the NAFC Marine Centre UHI in Scalloway, where you will study a Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering, Fabrication and Welding.
We are always looking for committed apprentices to join our team and learn new skills. If you are interested in practical engineering, have an eye for detail, committed to study, and ‘hands on’ work, then we would love to hear from you.
Please send your letter of interest outlining your qualifications and any existing skills to info@oceankinetics.co.uk.

SCHOLARSHIP
The Futures scholarship programme supports students who demonstrate the potential to become part of, and drive forward, Shetland’s engineering sector.
Six local students have already benefited from the Futures Scholarship, which provides an annual bursary of £3,000, mentoring support, opportunities to gain paid work experience with Ocean Kinetics during university holidays, and the potential for a permanent graduate role after completing their studies.
We usually open applications in August, so make sure you’re following us on social to hear more.
SPONSORSHIP
Ocean Kinetics’ sponsorship programme supported many young people in team sport and some challenging endeavours during 2025 including:
- Orkney Football Association
- The Solan Ocean Racing
- The Swan Trust
- Shetland Youth Voice
