New apprenticeship offers unique route into marine industry
A new in-house apprenticeship is offering ambitious young people the chance to build a career across some of the marine industry’s most highly specialised disciplines, with opportunities to develop skills in commercial vessel operations, diving, welding and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).
The new apprenticeship has been launched by Ocean Kinetics and has been designed to develop the next generation of skilled marine professionals through a combination of nationally recognised qualifications and extensive hands-on experience.
Unlike traditional apprenticeships, the programme provides broad exposure to a range of specialist marine operations before allowing apprentices to pursue areas of particular interest and aptitude as their careers develop.
The successful apprentice will work alongside Ocean Kinetics’ experienced engineers, welders, fabricators, vessel crews and commercial divers, becoming an integral part of the marine team from day one while contributing to real projects throughout Shetland and beyond.
As part of the programme, apprentices shall be offered insight and opportunity to undertake specialist training, subject to operational requirements and individual suitability. This can include but not limited to Commercial Diving Certificate, coded welding qualifications, Level 3 Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember Apprenticeship (MSSC/MCA/RYA) and ir ROV pilot training.
Throughout the apprenticeship, the successful candidate will gain practical experience across a wide range of marine disciplines, including:
- Marine construction and diving operations
- Vessel preparation, deck operations and workboat skills
- Welding and fabrication using MIG, TIG and manual metal arc techniques
- Rigging, lifting and cargo handling
- Navigation, communications and vessel handling
- Underwater inspection and survey work
- ROV and marine survey operations
- Offshore and coastal project support
The programme has been designed to produce versatile marine professionals with the practical skills, technical knowledge and safety awareness needed to thrive in a demanding industry.
Commercial manager at Ocean Kinetics, Shane Jamieson, said:

“From day one, our apprentice will become a valued member of the team, learning from highly experienced engineers, fabricators, welders, vessel crews and commercial divers while working on real projects in one of Scotland’s most dynamic marine environments.
“As they develop, there will be opportunities to specialise in areas such as commercial diving, workboats, coded welding or ROV operations, depending on their interests and aptitude, and our business needs. Throughout the programme, apprentices will also complete off-the-job training, attend formal training sessions and develop a thorough understanding of health, safety and environmental best practice, which underpins every aspect of Ocean Kinetics’ operations.
