Aqaba Container Terminal/BAM International – cathodic protection and inspection
Project:
To provide cathodic protection and inspection activities for the shipping port in the Gulf of Aqaba.
Solution:
This 18-month contract to provide corrosion prevention to Aqaba’s new container port was a logistically challenging project given the 40°C working conditions.
Ocean Kinetics decided to sub-contract Jordan-based company Barracuda Diving and Marine Service to support with a thickness survey, repairs and maintenance works. Barracuda also helped to source local divers, boats, and tools to support the operations.
The initial process was to clean the old steel piles and bulkhead wall so that an extensive metre thickness could be measured and the area could be prepared for repair. Next was to wrap steel piles with Denso Tape, insulating with HDPE jackets, steel jackets and grouting.
Ocean Kinetics and Barracuda worked together throughout the project, from carrying out bulkhead wall investigations to eventually welding plates onto the wall. Logistics also required constant management, from office hire and storage facilities to security measures.
