OCEAN KINETICS COMMITS TO HALF EMISSIONS BY 2030

Ocean Kinetics is the first company in Shetland to join the SME Climate Hub – an organisation which helps small to medium sized enterprises to deliver their climate goals.

By joining the SME Climate Hub, Ocean Kinetics has committed to halving all greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2030, as it works towards achieving net zero by 2050.

Managing director of Ocean Kinetics, John Henderson, said: “We know that the global climate has already increased by 1˚C over recent years. If we are to avoid the worst effects of global warming, we must play our part in ensuring that temperatures do not rise above 1.5˚C before 2050. Small to medium sized enterprises, like ours, make up 90% of businesses worldwide. If those that can, switch to more sustainable working methods, we can make a real impact on slowing down climate change.”

The SME Climate Hub will help Ocean Kinetics set targets, develop a climate strategy and measure emissions, which will be disclosed on a yearly basis. The business is already implementing a range of initiatives, which includes investing in electric vehicles and power points, introducing energy efficient equipment and lighting to its own premises, and working with clients to achieve efficiencies across their operations.

John Henderson, continued, “Now that we all recognise the immense damage that greenhouse gases have on the environment; we must react. The pandemic has demonstrated that corporations – large and small – can be much more flexible than we ever imagined. Going forward, if businesses like ours can continue to apply this same flexible approach to day-to-day operations, from an environmental perspective, we can bring about real change to the planet.
