Ocean Kinetics launches ‘Futures’ scholarship programme

As part of its ‘Futures’ initiative, Ocean Kinetics has, today, launched a scholarship programme which will assist a student who plans to study a STEM subject (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) at university or college with an annual bursary of £3,000. The successful candidate will also receive personal mentoring and paid work experience within the business outside term time.

Managing director of Ocean Kinetics, John Henderson, said: “Ocean Kinetics has a strong track record in supporting Shetland’s young people on their career path, most notably through our apprenticeship scheme.

“Through the new scholarship programme, we look forward to expanding that support to an individual that wants to pursue an academic path in one of the STEM subjects.

“The student will receive valuable industry experience throughout their studies, whilst a personal mentor will help develop their soft skills. And there is, of course, the possibility of a graduate engineering position at Ocean Kinetics on completion.”

Ocean Kinetics employs a range of skilled, fully qualified, technical and trades people, so career opportunities exist for coded welders, fabricators, turners, mechanical fitters, divers, project engineers, site managers, CSWIP/PCN qualified inspectors and 3D CAD design engineers. The company works to ISO 9001 & ISO 3834-2 certified quality management systems.

John concluded: “This appointment is part of a series of initiatives, entitled ‘Futures’, which the company is introducing to bring opportunities to young people through employment and sponsorship.”

Applications in writing are open to Shetland school students who plan to study a STEM subject at either HND or degree level this year.

Letters should include the applicant’s skills and qualifications, the chosen course and college/university, the reason they are drawn to this particular course/establishment, why they believe they are the ideal candidate, if there are any barriers that might prevent them undertaking study without scholarship support, and anything that is interesting or unique about your choice of career and/or ambitions for the future. Email to info@oceankinetics.co.uk by Friday 15 April. After the closing date, the applications will be reviewed and a shortlist of candidates will be invited for interview, based on the requirements of the scholarship.
