Ocean Kinetics launches ‘Futures’ campaign and recruits new graduate trainee

Ocean Kinetics has recruited a university graduate trainee to join its engineering team as part of a new campaign called ‘Futures’ to celebrate the many young people who play such an important role in the company – whether that’s through employment, sponsorship, or a planned new annual scholarship – and in the wider Shetland community.

Ealasaid Nicleòid, a first-class honours graduate from the University of the Highlands and Islands, is the first female graduate to work in the Ocean Kinetics’ mechanical and structural engineering department. By recruiting this new team member, Ocean Kinetics hopes to further diversify its team and gain a fresh graduate perspective within their operations.

Ealasaid’s main role at Ocean Kinetics involves evaluating a range of engineering software packages before choosing which platform to bring in-house. During this analysis, she will check the typical design arrangements of each package, along with value for money.

Introducing a graduate to the team is the first of many strategic initiatives Ocean Kinetics is undertaking in its Futures campaign. Other projects will include Q&A sessions with Ocean Kinetics’ staff, gifting sponsors with branded merchandise, and supporting an engineering student with their education funding and living costs.

“I am delighted to be joining Ocean Kinetics and to be part of a campaign that is highlighting the role of young people in the company and in the wider community in which Ocean Kinetics operates,” said Ealasaid. “This is a great initiative by Ocean Kinetics and demonstrates its commitment to our future and to the future of the local community.”

John Henderson, managing director of Ocean Kinetics, said: “We feel strongly about our community and its future, and are reliant on the next generations to keep that sense of community alive.  As such, creating the right opportunities for Shetland’s young people has always been a key part of our business. College and university graduates and modern apprentices already make up a significant part of our incredibly talented team, and we want to make sure that that continues.”

For many years, Ocean Kinetics has been sponsoring various local charities and sporting organisations, including The Swan Trust, Shetland Football Association, Spurs Hockey, Shetland’s Strongest Man – Dhanni Moar, and Dogs Against Drugs.

John continued: “Going forward, Ocean Kinetics Futures is the umbrella under which all these initiatives will be recognised, and I very much hope that participants will be proud to be associated with the campaign.”

Ocean Kinetics will launch and seek applicants for its scholarship fund early in 2022.
