Ocean Kinetics has just announced that its 2024 Futures scholarship has been awarded to Jos Hatrick, who will begin his studies in electrical and mechanical engineering at the University of Strathclyde this month (September). Jos will receive an annual bursary of £3,000, personal mentoring, and the opportunity to work with Ocean Kinetics, outwith term time.

Ocean Kinetics’ engineer and mentor for the ‘Futures’ programme, Robbie Georgeson, said: “We’re very pleased to have awarded Jos the 2024 ‘Futures’ scholarship. His course and career ambitions align perfectly with the objectives of the scheme, and we look forward to supporting him throughout his studies. We very much hope that the support that Jos is afforded through the scholarship provides a firm foundation on which to build a successful career.

“This is the fourth student that Ocean Kinetics has supported through the Futures scholarship scheme, and it is very rewarding to see each student excel in their studies.” The 2023 recipient, Daniel Henry, has recently graduated with a first-class, master’s degree in chemical engineering from Heriot-Watt University. Whilst the 2022 candidates, Elsie Msalila and James Rendall, are both finishing their summer work experience at Ocean Kinetics before entering their third year of studies. Elsie is studying mechatronics at Glasgow University, and James is pursuing mechanical engineering at Edinburgh Napier University.

The Ocean Kinetics Futures scholarship programme is awarded to Shetland students who plan to study a STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) at either HND or degree level. The scholarship is part of a series of initiatives, entitled ‘Futures’, a campaign designed to create opportunities for young people through employment and sponsorship.

Ocean Kinetics employs a range of skilled, fully qualified, technical and trades people, so career opportunities exist for coded welders, fabricators, turners, mechanical fitters, divers, project engineers, site managers, CSWIP/PCN qualified inspectors and 3D CAD design engineers. The company works to ISO 9001 & ISO 3834-2 certified quality management systems.
