Ocean Kinetics Drives Down Emissions

September 22, 2021
Ocean Kinetics has just taken delivery of an electric van

The Maxus eDeliver 3 is the latest in a long line of initiatives geared at reducing the company’s environmental footprint and driving down emissions. The van has already been very well received by the staff, with the 200-mile range and five cubic meters of cargo space proving to be very practical.

Managing director of Ocean Kinetics, John Henderson, said: “We have a clear and positive strategy to create environmental efficiencies and, at the same time, develop our knowledge and experience in this field. We are also passing on this knowledge to our clients on how they can do likewise.”

An increasing number of work and staff vehicles are entirely powered by electric or are hybrid electric, and to service this growing demand, electric charging points have been introduced around the Ocean Kinetics premises.

Complementing this, Ocean Kinetics’ workshops and offices are heated by biomass underfloor heating. The offices, stores and inspection house lighting has all been replaced or upgraded to the most efficient LED. The main workshop is also trialling LED lights.

John Henderson continued: “In the machine shops, we have installed a new generation pressbrake and guillotine which are all electric and consume 50% less energy than older hydraulic type, while the heavy saws have been replaced with new models which calculate material wastage and deliver the most efficient cuts as well as using less energy.

“On the marine side, the boat and barge generators have been replaced with modern units, and the company is working on a trial battery storage system to eliminate boat generators altogether.

“This is not about radical transformation,” said John Henderson. “It is a gradual and considered investment in the company and many of the sectors in which we operate, and, of course, it’s about us playing our own small part in the global climate crisis and our future.”
